Online reflection 1

The article in the Economist deals with the migrant crisis in Europe right now. It sugests a plan for Europe's refugees.

When you make a comparison like they do in the article, how much money Germans spend on chocolate and how much money the Donors asked for (about the same sum), it makes me think about the madness in my own consumption and others around me. How much money we spend on things that really are unnecessarily and how we complain on the most odd things. I read about a woman who spent 100 000 swedish crowns on redecorating her daughters room. 100 000. That's insane in my mind. Think about how many children in need that amount of money could have fed. For me it is naturally that all countries try to help as much as they can with the refugees. Sweden and Germany do their best, but others need to do more. Most of all I think the wars need to end so people could live side by side in peace. Why is it so hard to accept each other and be friends? Is it politics, religion or what?

  1. I also reflected about the consumption after the chocolate example. However our economy is depending on us to consume in order to generate growth and thus jobs, but we should obviously stop a portion of it to help the needy. As all wars they are complex and have many stakeholders. The conflict in Syria started in 2011 with a civil war and has since that been expanded and gained more stakeholders such as Russia. There for it is a difficult situation to solve and even if the war should end now people will still flew due to Syria being so damaged.

  2. I think it is really worth mentioning about the choclate example and it really made me think about my consumption as well. I also agree with you that it is a huge problem that some countries do more than other in accepting refugees. The prime reason should of course be to end the war and even though it looks really dark on that point right now, but one day it have to stop. The process of building up the countries that has suffered from war is going to be enormous... Interesting view from you, and I enjoyed to hear some personally feelings in the text. It is refreshing! // Gabriella Myrbäck

  3. I agree that the consumption from us in the western part of the world is excessive and the small amount that is given by donors in comparison is alarming. I don’t believe though that a reduction in consumption is the way to resolve this complex problem. As you mentions, I also think that all countries need to contribute and collaborate if we want to try to reach a solution.
